India – Politicizing Defense Force Actions
Padmini Arhant
Political nature anywhere especially in India is to politicize issues not barring national security matter to gain political mileage however possible considering general election is merely weeks away for public mandate.
Not surprisingly, politics hogging credit on victory while conveniently abstaining from responsibility in losses or defeat is second nature to them as well.
The fact remains that earlier terror incidents could have been thwarted had Indian political class nipped terror in the bud rather than allow the wild thorny cactus to spread all around India.
Fast forward to 2014 with the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sarkar or government, the spate of terror attacks continued in Pathankot, Uri and recently in Pulwama, Kashmir claiming more than 40 security personnel lives that should not have even occurred in the first place had Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government at the center and BJP Governor ruled Jammu & Kashmir acted swiftly on adequate warning and intelligence on imminent terror attack against defense force.
Again, the borders ever confronted with Pakistan Army & ISI waged proxy war deploying terror operatives against Indian army and civilian population escaped political attention divested in promoting Hindutva ideology and evading Rafale scandal as well as demonetization steam in mainland.
I reiterate had Indian defense force were to function as Pakistan counterpart in decision making process barring political involvement, terrorism would not have opportunity to transform Indian territory as terror playground.
Unfortunately, the strength and weakness of democracy lies in either extreme empowerment of civilian authority including bureaucracy citing democratic system such as in India or alternatively nullifying civilian represented government role in all matter not excluding citizens safety and security viz. Pakistan government barely able to perform for the electorate in the state.
Politics also never shy away from using and abusing anyone or anything to their advantage not to mention throwing those they find resourceful under the bus in pursuit of own glory and prominence.
The real heroes martyred in heinous terror attack and the ones engaged in delivering justice to those violated such as Indian Air Force personnel and significantly the latest Indian Air Force pilot Wimg Commander Abhinandan Varthaman having brought down enemy combat fighter jet and subsequently dealing with events retaining dignity essentially deserve legitimate recognition.
Politics transcending political profits and accolades for themselves specifically in the absence of punitive actions from them against terror in the entire term in office would be appreciative.
Unlike the posturing close to election speaks volume on missed calls for immediate intervention that could have arguably saved many lives lost until now.
The good news from Indian defense services along with confirmation from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on the immediate release of Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman is welcome with further expectations on eliminating terror from Pakistan soil.
Last but not the least, Pakistan extradition of Masood Azhar and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed would truly exemplify Pakistan’s commitment to peace made possible only upon purging terror from the Islamic state.
Thank you.
